about this painting:

Ships of freedom

Why does the sea make people happy?

Have you ever thought why we are so happy when we are at the sea side? Why does it attract us so much? There is something in the sea that completely fascinates us. We go there on a family vacation, recharge our batteries, get some suntan, and feel your connection with nature. Unfortunately some of us can’t go away even for a week due to different circumstances but they still try to somehow surround themselves with the sea: marine interior design items, famous canvases of ship or paintings of sunsets or sunrises. Leonid Afremov is also in love with the sea. Maybe this is the reason why he has so many waterscapes in his art collection? Let’s find out why the sea makes us happy according to scientists.

Reasons why we like the sea

  • The sea reminds us about childhood.

The sea reminds us about our very early childhood, the first 9 months we spend inside our mother. Then when we were children and our parents took us to the sea side, we were so impressed, that we still want to come back to the sea over and over again.

  • The sea is us

Human body mainly consists of water. According to its chemical composition the water in our body is similar to sea water.

  • The sea is a rest of mind

In our daily life we constantly get attacked by different sensory stimuli. There are so many external irritants and distractions that our brain doesn’t have time to relax. However, it really needs it. When we are at the sea, our brain as well as our feelings and emotions get some rest, because there’s only water in front of us and nothing else.

  • The sea has the magic of the color blue

People are naturally attracted to the color blue. Most of us will probably say that blue is their favorite color.

  • The sea helps us stay physically fit

Swimming is one of the best sports you could ever do. Due to water resistance and pressure we perfectly train our heart and all other muscles in our body.

  • The sea inspires

Throughout the history of mankind you can find many examples of tight connection of people and water. They have been described in literature and poetry; there are thousands of beautiful canvases dedicated to ships and the sea as well. We like listening to the sea, inhaling its wonderful smell, going surfing, swimming and fishing. We also like taking pictures of it because we really want to capture it in our memory until we come back there again.

I never would consider buying artwork through the Internet, but took a chance on "After the Show". It was a giclee and is beyond beautiful. I am now redoing my home and purchasing "City by the Lake" and browsing the entire site for upcoming gifts. If you are on the fence take the leap ... You will not be disappointed.

I'm a retired jazz trombonist. The essence of jazz is improvisation. Improvisation is the ability to look at a thing from a different perspective each time you look at it. That is what the pallet knife wielding Mr. Leonid Afremov does with his recreations. I have the pleasure of waking each morning and looking up the rain swept street of "The Loneliness of Autumn" and wondering where my road may take each day. I wasn't prepared for the blaze of color or the depth of feeling when I tore the boxing open at delivery even though I had looked at the painting on the internet dozens of times before purchasing. It was like seeing and hearing Louis Armstrong in person for the first time after just listening to him on recordings. Some times it even awakens the urge to pick up my horn and blow a few choruses straight at the painting expecting it to blow a chorus or two back at me. The man is a magician.
