about this painting:
SAILING AWAY
Sailing on the boat
Probably each of you at least once in your life floated on a boat. In the painting called Sailing Away relating to the series of his famous sailboat paintings Leonid Afremov just suggests you to make such a trip. The painting fascinates with its colors - it has such shades as yellow, orange and gray. The sea stretches to the horizon. It’s just extraordinary. In the centre of the picture we see that the rays of the sun are looking through the clouds. And to the left over the sea we see a huge cloud and the lightning comming from it. It is made in purple tones. All the rest of the sky is done in orange and yellow shades – the shades of the pre-dawn sun. The whole surface of the sea is covered with a light ripple, the consequence of a light breeze blowing a storm cloud into the distance. Closer to the shore the ripples get whiter, as we move farther and farther from the shore, more and more beige shades appear. It is very difficult to describe in words this color. On the horizon, we see the dark green hats of the summer forest. Closer to the center of the picture, they are getting lower and lower - the sea turns into a canal and goes beyond the horizon. And finally in the foreground we see a yacht and a small boat standing at the berth. It seems that the sailors left them for a short while in the hope that the storm will end soon and they can go sailing again. By the sail of the yacht we can determine that the light breeze is blowing. Its left part slightly bends wrapped in a light sea breeze. The right part is straightened out and fully ready for work. The moorage itself is made very clearly, we see distinctly the pillars penetrating into the sea on which it holds.
Storm is coming
On different seas the signs of the coming storms are also different. For example:
- The Port of Cape Town. If the top of the Lion is covered by a white cloud cap it is a sign of the onset of a violent storm.
- The port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Avachinskaya Bay. The signs are the strengthening of the northwesterly wind, the formation of a cloud cap over the Vilyuchinsky hill, the presence of a sharply outlined cloud ridge of cumuliform clouds over the western part of the bay.
- Mediterranean Sea. Changing the direction of the wind during the storm from the east to the west serves as a sure sign of weather improvement. East winds usually foreshadow the stormy weather.
