Ballet is a sort of art that can’t be understood by everyone. Luckily, Leonid Afremov is one of the people who have an eye for this old aristocratic tradition. Many of his wall paintings here are dedicated to ballet that is probably the trickiest of all dance types. It has grace and subtlety in it, but at the same time incredible strength and will. When we look at the performance, it seems to us that ballerinas are just fluttering around the stage without any effort. We don’t give it a thought that it requires years of training to achieve that degree of precision and artistry. Every move had been repeated hundreds of times before the dancer was ready to do it one last time – a perfect one – for a hall full of viewers. She stumbled and failed and tried it again and again. And now her body just seems to flow like a cloud of white laces and all these applauses are for her...

Per aspera ad astra

However, the heroine of this painting is only making her first steps down the path of a famous ballerina. Her first performance is still waiting ahead. But she dreams of the big stage and is ready to work as hard as she can to conquer it. Look at her, she is just back from the training.
