about this painting:
The cold sun
Amazingly beautiful landscape appears to our eyes in the painting by Leonid Afremov. The painting shows the winter landscape – the sunset in the cold December when the sun is not able to warm the cold winter air with its bright rays. Such colors in the sky can only be seen in winter – they are bright and cold at the same time. On the one hand we see such shades as red, orange, yellow but on the other – in the painting there are quite a lot of cold colors – blue and violet. Surprisingly, despite the fact that ground is covered with snow, the trees are green. Only one conclusion can be made here – they are coniferous and they remain green all year round. Although it seems from afar that they have green leaves. But the trees in the foreground are naturally completely naked – their thin trunks sadly stick out of the snow that covered the soil with a thick layer. Not a blade of grass is visible. Surely the landscape was made in the midst of winter, at the end of December or at the beginning of January, the time of the most severe frosts. It is at this time when the sky is painted in such shades. So far, nothing foreshadows the arrival of spring, and the cold winter wind it is felt even through the canvas. It strikes into the bones.
In the painting we see green trees. We cannot say for sure whether they are coniferous or not. If they are coniferous then it is perfectly normal that they remain green for the winter but if not then we are dealing with an anomaly. Let's try to figure it out.
The leaves that have not fallen down in the fall and, all the more remain hanging for the winter completely green, are a typical sign of the incompleteness of the growth and development processes and, therefore, insufficient preparation of the trees for winter. This is usually characteristic of the trees of:
- Western European
- Southern European
- North American origin.
They are not adapted to the short summer and require a longer and warmer growing season. They can freeze even in mild winters; during severe frosts the trees freeze to the level of snow cover.
If you like winter landscapes then this painting will certainly interest you. It will also suit the fans of any landscapes because its colors are simply fascinating!
