THE BLUE RIVER CAT - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

A watchful presence enters the currents as The Blue River Cat, where feline alertness seems to belong to the water rather than stand apart from it. The close, cropped face makes its single yellow-green eye feel less like a portrait detail than a point of attention, holding the surrounding flow in uneasy balance. Its blue features dissolve into the aquatic atmosphere, leaving the boundary between creature and environment beautifully uncertain.

From the cat’s right side, a stream of small fish extends into the surrounding blue-green space. Their movement gives the work a sense of thought passing outward - a private awareness becoming part of a larger, fluid rhythm. Bubbles, curling lines, and rising grasses support this impression without settling it into a literal scene, while the bright eye remains a steady anchor within the shifting field.

The painting’s surreal force lies in that tension between intimacy and immersion. The cat is close enough to meet the viewer’s attention, yet the currents seem to carry its presence beyond any fixed encounter. Deep blues and teal shadows create a nocturnal depth, while pale highlights and ochre notes keep the gaze moving through the water-like expanse, where watchfulness becomes a form of belonging.
