SURREAL SERPENT - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

A circling force gathers through the image before Surreal Serpent brings that energy into focus as a presence both watchful and uncanny. Its head turns toward the edge of perception, while the broad loop of its body seems to contain the surrounding tumult rather than merely pass through it. The result feels less like a creature encountered in nature than a threshold between instinct and dream, where attention becomes charged and uncertain.

The vertical slit of the visible eye gives the serpent a precise, almost measuring awareness. Yet the vivid head, marked by warm flashes against deeper surrounding tones, resists any simple reading of threat. It may suggest appetite, vigilance, transformation, or the difficult concentration required to move through an unstable world. The small eye-like detail near the snout complicates its expression, making the face seem to hold more than a single intention.

Around this central presence, color behaves like atmosphere under pressure, tightening the sense that the serpent has emerged from a world still in motion. The circular sweep invites the gaze back toward the head, where the creature seems poised between advancing and remaining enclosed by its own orbit. That tension gives the work its otherworldly charge: a vision of consciousness turning inward without ever becoming still.
