FORGOTTEN STATUE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Across an open, dreamlike expanse, Forgotten Statue considers the distance between witnessing and belonging. A solitary figure stands below, turned toward a taller presence elevated at the far side of the scene. Their opposing scale gives the encounter a subdued gravity, as though memory has taken the form of a place where the living measure themselves against what remains.

The raised figure does not appear fully monumental; its stillness feels vulnerable as well as authoritative. Between the two forms, broad horizontal divisions create a passage that is neither clearly public nor private, allowing the scene to hover between an abandoned square and an inward landscape. The surrounding blocks suggest structures without resolving into a recognizable city, keeping the encounter suspended outside ordinary time.

Warm and cool passages meet without a single source of illumination, lending the space the uncertainty of recollection. The smaller figure’s position near the open foreground leaves room for hesitation, approach, or departure, while the dark base beneath the statue gives permanence to an otherwise shifting world. What endures here is less the statue itself than the act of looking toward it, patiently and without assurance.
