City on the Neva

St. Petersburg has many nicknames. The city is called Northern Venice or simply the northern capital of Russia. And indeed, for several centuries the city has been the capital of the Russian state and ceased to be it only at the beginning of the 20th century with the coming to power of the Bolsheviks and the formation of the Soviet state.
