about this painting:
DANCING AS MEANS OF EXPRESSION
TO DANCE IS TO LIVE
When we look at ballerinas on the stage, we only see the grace and beauty of their movements. However, we almost never think about how hard it must have been for them to reach that level of agility.
There are hundreds of ballet schools in the world. The most famous is probably the Royal Ballet School in London. Moreover, there are a couple of good ballet schools in Russia and in the USA. Here are some facts about ballet dancers that you might not know:
- The students that are talented enough to enter such academies start training at a very young age, around 3-4 years old. They have to overcome a lot of difficulties in order to develop flexibility, grace and technique.
- At the age of 12-14 they can apply to dancing academies that prepare professional dancers. Really prestigious schools of this kind are pretty expensive but they guarantee that you will be admitted to the best ballet troupes in the world. Because you will learn from the best.
- The rules of these academies are very strict. Students live in the campus and additionally to normal school subjects have to study History of Arts, History of Music and other professional subjects. And, of course, they have to dance. A lot!
To be a ballet dancer is as hard as to be a professional athlete. Their lives are very intense, and they often get injured during trainings. Anyway, if you work hard, it will pay off pretty quickly. Ballerinas start their careers at a very young age.
FROM BALLET TO ART
Being an artist, Afremov understands better than anyone else the ballerinas. You can see a magnificent result on canvas but you have no idea of how much work it is and what a painter had to overcome in order to create a painting.
At first sight, it looks like a simple blue canvas, but if you look closer you will see a ballerina on this painting. Afremov decided to paint her not on stage but in the gym, warming up, preparing for an important concert. She is wearing a simple black maillot. We cannot see her face, so she remains anonymous as a general incarnation of all ballet dancers.
Her figure is in the center of the composition so that we would not be distracted by anything else. She is not moving but chaotic strokes of colors kind of hint on what is going to happen next.
