about this painting:
Windmills in Holland
Long time, ago Holland won back land from water with a great difficulty. In order to fight it people had to be very smart and innovative. They built dams, embankments and used the power of the wind as well as windmills to get new territories. It’s interesting to out that the very first windmill in Holland was built around the 8th century. Nowadays windmills in Holland are an integral and very well-known part of the Holland’s landscape and the recognizable symbol of fighting nature in general. Leonid Afremov loves travelling around Europe. He’s been almost everywhere there and enjoyed the wonderful views it has to offer. He wanted to show us the uniqueness of all of the places he’s visited and what he liked about them the most. In this beautiful windmill painting we see the true spirit of Holland, its symbol and the fantastic beauty of a setting sun.
Most famous windmills of Holland
It is the most famous group of windmills. It is included in the List of World Heritage of UNESCO. These nine windmills can help us remember that they used to be very important for people and helped them to fight flooding. Kinderdijk is an absolutely gorgeous and picturesque place. If you would like to know how millers used to live a long time ago, you need to visit this place. You will definitely be impressed and have many unforgettable memories and wonderful pictures.
The Schiedam windmills are famous for their size. They are considered to be one of the biggest windmills in the world as some of them are more than 40 meters tall. One of the most interesting things about them is that they weren’t used for pumping the water but for milling grain.
- Zaanse Schans.
Zaanse Scans is a very interesting place. About two hundred fifty years ago more than six hundred windmills formed the largest manufacturing zone in the entire world. They did a wide variety of works: with their help people produced paints, mustard, butter and paper. Today it is a natural reserve and an outdoor museum. Hundreds of people visit it every year.
A beautiful place to visit
There are more than 1000 windmills in Holland and if you visit this wonderful country there is only a tiny chance that you won’t see at least one of them. Leonid Afremov, in his beautiful picture of a giant fan, wanted to show us history and pride of Holland.
