WHITE SAIL - oil painting on canvas by Leonid Afremov

WHITE SAIL — A luminous study of movement and open water, centered on a small sailboat advancing beneath a tall white sail. Vivid color and energetic mark-making give the scene a dramatic, sunlit presence.

The vertical composition places the narrow triangular sail on a strong central axis, rising through a densely worked field of deep navy and cobalt blue. Pale yellow, green, and lavender strokes animate the predominantly white sail, while the hull gathers brown, ochre, cream, and dark blue accents. Beneath it, horizontal bands of turquoise, teal, orange, red, violet, and pink dissolve into mirrored reflections across the foreground water. Two small figures appear beside the boat, reinforcing its scale and sense of passage. Short, angular, impasto-like brushstrokes create broken surfaces throughout the water and sky, replacing sharply defined scenery with saturated, rhythmic color.

Its vertical format and concentrated central structure make it especially effective in a reading nook, study, entryway, or coastal-inspired living space. The work brings both maritime calm and visual momentum, pairing the recognizable language of sailing with expressive contemporary color. It can anchor a quieter palette through its blues and white sail, or complement interiors that welcome turquoise, coral, violet, and other lively accents.
