WHEN THE NIGHT CITY SLEEPS - oil painting on canvas by Leonid Afremov

WHEN THE NIGHT CITY SLEEPS — A vivid nocturnal cityscape captures the hush that settles over urban streets after dark. Deep blues and violets surround a warmly lit building, while color and reflection keep the scene gently alive.

Expressive, heavily textured brushwork builds the broad horizontal composition from angular patches of turquoise, orange, yellow, red, green, and white. Dark, leafless branches arc across the upper and central areas, framing a multi-story building with a peaked roof section near the center-right. Its glowing rectangular windows and nearby round lights punctuate the cool surroundings. Below, a wet street or canal-like foreground breaks into elongated reflections, where blue, orange, yellow, and white marks shimmer across the surface. A small pale figure-like shape appears near the lower center-left, adding a subtle sense of human presence.

With its quiet atmosphere and strong color contrasts, this painterly night scene brings reflective urban energy to living rooms, reading spaces, hallways, and creative work areas. The horizontal flow encourages the eye to travel from shadowed trees through illuminated windows and outward across the luminous foreground. It suits interiors seeking a contemplative city mood with expressive texture, vivid evening color, and a distinctive sense of stillness.
