about this painting:

What role does the city play in our lives? Many painters tried to answer this question for centuries. Some of them see the city as an incarnation of life and energy. For others it is an evil space where people loose themselves and anything can happen to them. Let us study some examples of world urban art.

Great artists who painted the city

  1. The first one to be named is, of course, Vincent Van Gogh. Among his creations there are many different paintings, not only paintings of the city. However, we shall include him in this list, because for him his own native town played a sad and crucial role. Its citizens were the first people to see and reject his talent, what after all leaded to the master’s tragical end.
  2. The second artists in our list would be Mark Chagall. His phantasmagorical city paintings like “Over the City” are famous all over the world. In this symbolical painting, Chagall and his wife Bella are flying over Vitebsk, a city in Belarus. According to the artist, a human is free and self-sufficient. Chagall painted himself and his beloved wife over the troubles of a boring daily life. For him living in the city has never been troublesome because if you are truly free it does not mean where to live.
  3. Clode Monet was a great impressionist. He lived in Paris, and this city was an immense source of inspiration for him. In his paintings, the city always appears very cheerful and light. There are many natural bodies of water like little lakes or pounds where you can swim. City is a peaceful positive space.

Afremov’s urban landscape

This painting by a famous artist Leonid Afremov shows a young couple walking under the rain. Their graceful figures are beautifully outlined in front of the light blue mist.

They are strolling down an empty alley. A woman is walking very close to her partner touching his arm in a very gently and affectionate manner. They seem to be immersed in an interesting conversation. They look very sweet sharing an umbrella under a heavy rain.

You can notice how beautiful this autumn alley is. The leaves of the trees are painted in different shades of red, pinkish and yellow. This tiny lane in the park is a real treasury of colors. They remind us about the pleasure of walking alone or with your partner under an autumn rain.

I just received my "City by the Lake" painting and I am in complete awe. It is absolutely breathtaking. The vibrancy of the colors are incredible. I can't take my eyes off of it! Whenever I feel sad I always look at your paintings to cheer myself up and now I have my own! Thank you so much and I will definitely order again in the future!

I got my first painting this month and...WOW...I have been admiring them on facebook but I never expected what I got...it is beyond my wildest dreams! The colours are so vibrant and I just find it all very relaxing and soothing. The thing that gets me is the price! So affordable! I am most definitely purchasing a lot more! LOVE your work Mr Afremov!

The paintings are beautiful. Words really can't do justice to it. I found his paintings through a friend. I was nervous about buying art online, and there were a few bumps along the way (problems with the beta website, a shipping delay, and one of my 5 paintings was the incorrect one). But they went out of their way to fix the issue and I was so impressed that I have already ordered another painting and have my eye on several others. The paintings are very well packed for shipping. The hardest part is deciding what to purchase. I do wish there were more small artworks available (16" by 20" or smaller) so I could enjoy the paintings in smaller spaces like my office.
