This painting looks tridimensional and has a lot of heavy textures
Under The Tailfan Leaves focuses on a crest close-up with iridescence first, then lets the eye travel outward across a palace walkway.
Light is placed in clear value blocks so the composition stays readable. Depth comes from overlapping planes rather than fussy detail. Soft atmospheric haze separates planes and prevents the scene from feeling busy. Negative space is used on purpose, letting the composition breathe.
Color moves through violet accents on green, building contrast through thick, visible impasto ridges. There is a celebratory but poised calm to it, even where the texture is bold.
Thick palette-knife strokes stay front and center: ridges describe surfaces, and highlights are placed as bold, paintable shapes.
Texture is emphasized through ridged impasto that catches light and gives the surface a sculptural feel.
The brightest paint sits on the focal object, while the background stays looser and more abstracted to preserve depth.
The composition is staged like a set: foreground clarity, midground context, and a distant layer that fades into color.
Directional knife marks subtly point toward the subject, creating movement even in still scenes.
