about this painting:
The parade of umbrellas
Many of Leonid Afremov paintings depict rain. Wet sidewalks and alleys speckled with colorful reflections, mist-smeared houses basking in lantern light, lonely strangers hiding under their umbrellas… This one, though, hosts an entire umbrella show! A good dozen of umbrellas are making their way through the city, hustling and jostling as their owners crowd at the traffic light. Red, orange, pink, blue and green, they turn the street into a phantasmagoric river of color. We can’t see any of the people beneath them, and they seem to be walking on their own, driven by their unknown umbrella intentions.
Color and light working together
This picture is a fine example of Leonid art style. Using large chunky strokes of paint, he replicates the play of light on the wet umbrella surfaces. The rest of the city is made by applying long vertical streaks of contrasting colors and scraping into them with a palette knife to create textured high-rise apartments. Accentuated by the blurred dots of traffic lights, it looks flashy and bizarre. To offset the bright colors on the front, Leonid Afremov painted both the sky and the remote buildings in the background in pale shades of blue, yellow and lilac. Altogether, it makes the scene very vivid and catchy, with layers of depth gradually revealed to the eye.
