TO BE OR NOT TO BE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

TO BE OR NOT TO BE — A dramatic still life where beauty and mortality meet in a richly layered arrangement. TO BE OR NOT TO BE brings together vivid flowers, a skull, a candle, and a glass of red liquid in a scene charged with theatrical symbolism.

Dense blossoms fill the upper half, with red, orange, yellow, and pink petals glowing against a deep, indistinct interior. Below, a forward-facing skull anchors the composition, its dark eye sockets and articulated teeth rendered in expressive strokes. A narrow candle rises at the right, its flame creating a concentrated point of warmth, while a stemmed glass rests beneath the skull. Green leaves and dark stems weave diagonally through the arrangement, linking the floral abundance to the objects below. Thick, broken brushwork gives every surface a tactile, animated quality. Deep brown, black, burgundy, crimson, ochre, olive, violet, and cream create strong contrast between shadow and illuminated detail.

With its vertical format and commanding central imagery, this piece can bring a sense of drama to a study, library, dining area, or creatively styled living space. Its ornate flowers offer visual richness, while the skull, flame, and red-filled glass introduce a contemplative counterpoint. The warm highlights and textured marks reward close viewing, making the composition especially compelling where it can serve as a conversation-starting focal point.
