about this painting:
TIME FOR JOY
Leonid Afremov invites everyone to enjoy the colors of his magnificent a Time For Joy, which shows a street in one of the European towns, at least it’s the first impression that gives us this artwork. The unforgettable colors make the painting very bright and expressive. The painting depicts an evening in one of the European cozy streets. The sky is full of unusual colors - dark blue wonderfully intertwines with yellow and orange. It seems that this is a reflection of the city's lanterns. Yellow and orange shades are presented not only in the sky but also in the trees standing apart from each other and also in the building that forms the main theme of this picture. On the asphalt, we clearly see the reflection of the light of the lanterns, it is depicted as two elongated white spots. The whole square in front of the building glitters as if covered with water of the recently fallen rain. More likely it was a light summer rain, which brought some freshness in the dusty town. The building itself is very colorful, it is colored in such shades as yellow, orange and, that seems to be rather strange, blue. A window is painted namely in this color. It seems to reflect a piece of the sky – the blue sky which we see tomorrow when the sun rises high and lightens the morning town. The blue we also see on the right - the first floor of the building is painted in this color, it’s better to say smeared. On the main door we see a sign. Another sign we see a little higher. We can only guess what is written on these signs. Maybe they indicate that it is a drinking establishment. And we are waiting the late visitors who will come out from the building after waiting for the end of the rain over a glass of beer and warm conversations. They will be shaking hands for a long time, but in the end they will all the same go home. After all, everyone should go to work tomorrow.
Night for joy
Drinking establishments have been always very popular among great number of people. They visited them for different purposes, but the main one was of course joy and communication with friends. Let’s see what were and are the main types of these institutions in Europe:
- Cabaret - entertainment venues, people came there to see a show, have a good time, meet and talk.
- Cafes - were founded in London, circa 1652, but popularized by France.
- Tavern - French drinkeries kept basically by well-to-do peasants.
