 about this painting:

THE TASTE OF LOVE

Another riddle

In modern art, the limits and stands of painting genres are rather conventional. When you plan out a still life, you are free to do literally anything, from painting flowers to whipping up a random installation using any objects at hand. Leonid Afremov obviously doesn’t like rules and limitations. The picture before us contains a strange selection of items that offers us a riddle to solve.  Why these very fruits? What is the meaning of the watch? And finally, why is this unusual palette knife painting called “The Taste of Love”? Let’s get a shot at it together.

Deciphering the composition

  • In general, fruits are associated with sweetness, delicacy and delight, so it’s no surprise the artist chose them to represent the feeling of love. We can easily imagine him treating the lady of his heart with a plate of her favorite dainties.
  • Each fruit has a symbolic meaning that comes into play when you try to get to the core of the author’s idea. Apple is a symbol of love and life, peach signifies youth and fertility, and plum is compared to a woman in many cultures.
  • Some of the fruits are cut revealing the juicy pulp and giving us a glimpse of their tender pit which might be a reference to intimacy and sensuality.
  • The most mind-challenging image in the painting, however, is the watch. Why did the artist decide to include it in the composition? Perhaps he wanted to remind us of the flutter that fills our heart when we look at the clock and count the minutes until the arrival of our beloved? Or the significance of time spent together? Or its inexplicable ability to change pace dragging unbearably slowly as we wait and flying by in a wink when we beg for it to freeze? Apparently, these questions are up to you to answer.

New life of still life

As you can see, painting unsuggestive combinations of flowers, food and dishes on canvas is no way to gain fame as an artist. If you want to assert a niche in the densely populated art world, you need to think out of the box. This picture once again proves that still life can be just as intriguing and thought-provoking as more “intellectual” genres of painting. By the way, you can have it on your wall – all you need to do is add it to your shopping cart.
