about this painting:

Cities and their lives

Every town has its story. Some have outlived dozens of dynasties and seen hundreds of battles waged at their walls, some were born only a few decades ago. But each of them has a lot to tell to a curious ear and to show to a curious eye. Travelling all over the world, Leonid Afremov visited many cities that stunned him with their peculiar atmosphere and amazing sights. Some of them had such a strong impression on the artist that he decided to paint them. This one is no exception. Depicting a majestic gothic construction on a river bank, the artist focused on its spectacular architecture and historic importance. Although we don’t know how exactly this building is called or where it is situated, we can feel its grandeur and significance. So let’s take an imaginary trip to this unknown place and think what this structure could be.

The mystery of one building

  • Perhaps it’s a Medieval cathedral built by some famous architect?
  • Ora city hall, maybe even with a bell tower?
  • Or an old and revered institute with a vast library and observatory?

We can only guess. But the vibrant image of this building will be standing before our eyes for a long time. Its tall towers and pointed roofs rise over a row of contemporary-looking houses suggesting this is a city where historic values border on modern comfort. It could be Copenhagen or Amsterdam, one of the old towns of Germany or France. There is a string of round-shaped trees growing along the street and a brightly illuminated bridge over the river. The shiny water surface reflects the lights of the lamp posts and house windows adding enticement and dynamic to the painting. The buildings are painted in vibrant colors, too. Their walls seem to be made of gold while their red, blue and violet roofs make them look like a miniature model of the city than the city itself. The sky is filled with swift multicolored strokes making the painting even more surreal and mesmerizing.

I first discovered Leonid’s work on DeviantArt and fell in love with his use of warm and cool colors. After purchasing my first piece for my office at work, I’ve become addicted to his paintings. His technique leaves a beautiful texture on the canvas, and he truly captures the reflections of light on the rain-covered walkways. Everyone who comes into my office stops to admire his work!
