THE HAUNTING WELL - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

At the center of an enclosed darkness, The Haunting Well opens onto a source of illumination that feels both inviting and forbidden. Its green radiance gathers beneath the uneven rim, suggesting a depth that refuses to remain merely architectural. The surrounding shadows do not conceal the well so much as give its light a private, almost watchful presence.

The illumination seems to rise from below rather than fall from above, altering the character of everything near it. Pale blocks around the opening catch a faint spectral tint, while the paving stones recede into charcoal and blue-green obscurity. This reversal of ordinary light makes the well feel less like a container than an active threshold.

Its circular form offers no clear direction through the scene. The eye returns to the luminous center, then meets the rough enclosure beyond - walls, steps, and dark passages that suggest movement without revealing where it leads. The setting carries the stillness of a place encountered after departure, when familiar structures have become difficult to read.

What lingers is the tension between invitation and warning. The bright heart of the well promises knowledge, escape, or simply another kind of night, yet the heavy shadows surrounding it resist any easy answer. Its mystery is held in that unresolved exchange: the deeper the darkness, the more insistently the light asks to be seen.
