about this painting:
THE COAST OF NORMANDY AT NIGHT
The French Fire
In his famous painting, the beautiful cityscape, Leonid Afremov depicted the Norman coast – several houses standing in a straight line and yachts moored to the pier – you won’t find anything like that in the works by modern artists. It cannot be said that the painting depicts exactly Normandy since such houses can be found in many European cities. For some of you, such a landscape will even remind Venetia, the canal city. Here everything is as if taken from the water city– canal and yachts standing on the berth. Oh no! Everyone knows that the Venetians use gondolas.
Let's say a few words about the palette that the artist used – in the painting dominate blue shades. This color is soothing, but at the same time it looks rather unusual as if the night has fallen on the city. But maybe the artist actually wanted to portray namely these light conditions. It is impossible not to notice that flames are blazing on the roofs of the houses and even the night is not capable of extinguishing this fire. We even see that the flames are reflected in the water on the right. The fire engulfed not only the roofs but already spread to the walls –we see bright tongues between the two houses.
The land on the ocean
Normandy is one of the most picturesque regions of France: with its medieval architecture, beautiful nature and amazing cuisine it attracts every year more and more travelers. We will tell why you should go 130 kilometers from Paris to see this land with your own eyes:
- To see the beauty of the cliffs at Etretat, the landmark of Normandy. They look fantastic: alabaster white giants, thick green carpet, fancy arches and rock-needles, and at the foot – long strips of beaches where you can take your ease for a while in hot weather.
- To visit Mont Saint-Michel Abbey or “the eighth wonder of the world”. This is a real city with a tower in the Romanesque style, located 2 kilometers from the mainland and surrounded on all sides by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
- To walk through the ancient Rouen, the capital of Normandy. Its streets are a conductor to the Middle Ages: wooden and stone houses, numerous churches and cathedrals.
Do not be afraid of this fire in the painting! Let it only heat your hearts with warmth and pleasant emotions that this Norman landscape gives you!
