THE CITY OF FLOATING CLOCKTOWERS - oil painting on canvas by Leonid Afremov

Suspended time becomes the governing mystery in The City of Floating Clocktowers, where the architecture seems to have escaped the ground and entered a realm governed by its own impossible measure. The city does not feel abandoned; it feels momentarily released from ordinary laws, held between movement and stillness.

A dominant copper-and-teal tower anchors the vision without fully explaining it. Its clock face offers the appearance of order, yet the surrounding towers drift through clouds, making time feel less like a system than a changing atmosphere. Each elevated structure suggests a different pace, as though the city contains many versions of the present at once.

Below, dense rooftops gather into a far-reaching urban weave, while cloud bands divide the scene into shifting levels. This separation gives the city a dreamlike distance from itself: streets and buildings remain implied, but the eye is drawn upward toward places that cannot be reached by ordinary ascent.

The ornate towers carry a sense of ceremony, though no particular occasion is named. Their spires, domes, and varied clock markings lend the imagined city an almost civic dignity, even as its floating forms keep that dignity unstable. What remains is a vision of time made architectural - grand, suspended, and quietly uncertain.
