THE CITY IN THE CLOUDS - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Suspended above any visible ground, The City in the Clouds imagines civilization as a realm released from ordinary geography. Its towers gather with almost ceremonial intensity, suggesting a place shaped by aspiration rather than necessity. Warm light moves across the clustered forms while lavender distance softens their outer limits, giving the city an inward, half-remembered grandeur.

The elevated bridge introduces a human measure to this impossible height. Its repeated arches seem to offer passage, yet the clouds conceal where the route begins and ends, leaving arrival suspended between invitation and uncertainty. Beneath the ornate skyline, that obscured foundation becomes part of the work’s emotional force: the city appears enduring, but never entirely secured.

Farther towers recede into haze as though the architecture continues beyond what can be reached or fully known. Domes and slender spires lend the scene a devotional air without binding it to any single belief, while the gentle radiance keeps its magnificence from becoming severe. What emerges is a vision of belonging imagined at a distance - alluring, elevated, and just beyond the limits of solid ground.
