This painting looks tridimensional and has a lot of heavy textures
The Canal In Winter begins with a café table with two mugs up front, then fades into the wider space of a lakeside terrace.
Midground shapes stay simplified and graphic, while texture supplies the nuance. Sunlit geraniums adds a second beat of story without crowding the surface. Negative space is used on purpose, letting the composition breathe. Light is staged in layers: a bright foreground note, a quieter midground, and a deep receding distance.
Underneath, autumn copper with deep navy is tempered by subtle neutrals so the focal point stays clear. The scene lands as quietly bustling, a quiet moment shaped by light and space.
Every surface is constructed for knife work—layered, tactile, and readable, with reflections suggested in a few confident passes.
Texture is emphasized through ridged impasto that catches light and gives the surface a sculptural feel.
Soft reflections appear where they make sense—water, glass, polished stone—kept broad and easy to execute.
The composition is staged like a set: foreground clarity, midground context, and a distant layer that fades into color.
