THE BANSHEES CRY - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Against the unsettled sky, The Banshees Cry turns grief into a presence that cannot be separated from the weather around it. The dark figure seems less like a defined character than a force caught at the edge of recognition, facing the pale opening as though drawn toward - or resisting - an unseen summons. Its elongated strands give the silhouette a sense of motion without resolving where that motion leads.

The light behind the figure does not console so much as expose the tension between departure and return. It lends the surrounding darkness a suspended quality, as if the landscape has fallen silent in anticipation of a voice just beyond hearing. The work’s melancholy remains deliberately unspoken, held between the human outline and the vast, unsettled sky.

At the bottom, the layered rocks offer no secure refuge; they feel like the remnants of a place already altered by what has passed through it. This gives the image a lingering, almost elegiac force. The figure remains solitary, yet not entirely powerless - its presence gathers the surrounding shadows into a moment of witness, where sorrow becomes something elemental and difficult to name.
