SUSPENDED OPEN depicts a figure standing before a glowing doorway, shadows stretching unnaturally. Thick palette knife strokes give the surface a physical, sculpted presence.

At the heart of this enclosed, shadowed space, Suspended Open turns an opening into a test of presence and departure. The solitary figure stands where darkness gives way to a brightness too forceful to read as simple welcome. Its stillness holds the tension of someone paused between remaining and crossing, with no visible certainty about what lies beyond.
The long shadows reaching toward the viewer make the threshold feel consequential. They seem to belong not only to the figure but to the surrounding room, as though the past has followed this moment as far as it can. Warm light cuts through the cool, subdued enclosure, creating an atmosphere in which hesitation becomes almost tangible.
Yet the work does not resolve the figure’s choice. Because the face and destination remain withheld, the scene stays open to private associations - departure, return, revelation, or the need to stand briefly outside one’s former circumstances. The narrow opening concentrates that ambiguity, offering illumination without promising safety, and solitude without making it absolute.
