about this painting:
STRANGER THINGS AROUND US
Do you remember well your dreams? Can you agree that they are always quite strange and unexplainable? The laws of nature don’t work there, so you can often see people flying up high, animals who can speak and objects that change their shape all the time. On one hand, it can be terrifying but, on the other hand, sometimes you wish your life could be like that. In your dreams, there are no rules and anything you wish is possible.
Art, to a large extent, consists of irrational dreams and unconscious desires. Some artists know how to transfer their magical dreams and weird fantasies on canvas. Look at this goat painting by Leonid Afremov.
This goat painting cannot be called the most typical for him of all his works. As you can see, it was heavily influenced by surrealistic tradition. The composition of this artwork is very original. The center of the canvas is occupied by a one-eyed goat. He seems to be attentively looking at you while smiling.
Many ancient cultures believed that their gods can take the appearance of some animals, so that they could watch humans without drawing too much attention to themselves.
- For example, you can remember Egyptian gods and goddesses. The god named Anubis who was responsible for afterlife was usually depicted with a dog head. Also, Egyptians painted them in a special way. You could only see one part of their faces, which was considered to be respectful towards the gods.
- In Ancient Greek mythology Pan who was also described as half human and half goat symbolized love and fertility, since a goat is one of the most lustful animals.
- In India this animal was a reincarnation of the God of Fire. Indians used to believe that fire gives life to everything and that it is the most important element of all.
So, as you can see a goat plays a very important role in art and culture of many countries.
This particular goat painting by Leonid Afremov has something in common with the ancient artistic tradition. However, you can still recognize the author by the technique he uses which consists in applying wider strokes with a palette knife. The palette of this work is not as bright and colorful as many of his works are. It’s rich of more mild and gentle colors suitable for depicting a mysterious world of dreams.
