SUBDUAL - oil painting on canvas by Leonid Afremov

SUBDUAL — A vivid study in motion and tension, this painting gathers a closely packed group of horses into one charged, diagonal sweep. Deep shadows, glowing warm tones, and cool highlights create an immediate sense of movement.

A pale gray-blue horse commands the center-right foreground, its eye, muzzle, neck, and front body defined with striking clarity. To the left, a dark horse-like figure rises through dense navy and black brushwork, while a chestnut-brown horse anchors the central area with ochre, burnt orange, and crimson accents. Thin lines suggest reins or harness straps crossing among the animals. Thick, short strokes build every passage, allowing forms to emerge and dissolve within an indistinct, multicolored setting. Bright white and yellow highlights flash against the darker surrounding paint, intensifying the energetic, tumultuous mood.

With its bold diagonal structure and emphatic color contrasts, this work brings kinetic character to a living room, study, hallway, or creative workspace. It suits interiors that welcome expressive texture and dramatic equestrian imagery, while the partially abstracted forms invite repeated viewing as details shift through the layered brushwork. A compelling choice for collectors drawn to movement, vivid color, and atmospheric ambiguity.
