Studying Bible

Philosophical reflections

Probably there is no book in the world better known than the Bible. Of course, it has been always attracting the attention of many artists – writers, poets and painters. Leonid Afremov also chose the Biblical subject for all of his painting. For him, this book is a means of uniting people of different confessions – in the end we should not forget that different religions have many similarities. We will not go into details here, but only confine ourselves to vague generalities.

Let's look carefully at people studying the Bible in the painting – these are clearly people of different confessions – on the head of the man standing at the left we see a skullcap, besides he is dressed in dark Muslim clothes, it's hard to say of what exactly consists his attire. The gentleman standing in the middle apparently is not an adherent of any religion, he is dressed quite secularly - he has a bowler hat on his head, a usual headdress of men in the 19th century, we also see a jacket and shirt on him – also classic clothes for the urban intelligentsia, the man on the right is obviously a Jew – his colorful appearance is also embellished by the clothes, namely the headdress – a pile.

The plot of the painting can be called utopian - you could hardly witness such a scene at that time. And it's not even about confrontations between different religions and confessional disputes, but it’s about the likelihood of meeting such people under similar circumstances. But still the artist tried to add such features to his painting that can attract the attention of even people who are distant from art! You can hardly find anything better among famous Bible paintings!
