STARGAZING FAWNS - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Between meadow shadow and an opening sky, Stargazing Fawns considers attention as a form of kinship. The larger deer turns outward while the smaller remains in profile, creating a subtle exchange between companionship and solitary wonder. Their upward orientation gives the scene a feeling of pause, as though the world below has briefly yielded to something beyond its immediate reach.

The darkened sky carries both tenderness and uncertainty, its mauve and coral radiance gathering around narrow descending streaks of light. These marks do not settle into a fixed meaning; they may suggest weather, distance, or the inward impressions that arise when familiar ground meets the unknown. Against that spaciousness, the warm bodies of the fawns feel present without seeming enclosed.

Tall grasses and pale seed heads hold the animals at the threshold between shelter and exposure. The smaller fawn’s attentive profile lends the scene a note of watchfulness, while the outward-pointing ears of the larger one make its stillness feel receptive rather than passive. What remains is a gentle tension between looking up and remaining rooted, rendered with a dreamlike calm that leaves the moment open.
