SKYBOUND MANTA PLAINS - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Between open earth and limitless air, Skybound Manta Plains turns a familiar horizon into a place where the laws of belonging have loosened. The manta ray passes overhead with the calm authority of something returning to its natural element, though that element is not the one expected. Its suspended presence gives the surrounding plain a strange new scale, making the sky feel less like distance than a current.

The work’s serenity comes from this reversal rather than from escape alone. Warm light gathers along the clouds and far ground, while the cooler sky holds the creature in a more inward, suspended register. A broad band across the middle distance suggests a threshold that can neither fully separate land from air nor allow them to settle into certainty.

The manta’s upward-sweeping wings lend its movement a measured grace, but the dark underside keeps the image from becoming weightless fantasy. There is a sense of intelligence in its passage - not a story being acted out, but a quiet permission to see the ordinary world from an impossible angle.

At the lower edge, grasses remain rooted and attentive, anchoring the scene without resolving its contradiction. The result is an atmosphere of gentle estrangement, where freedom feels less like departure than a temporary change in the rules of the horizon.
