SKY ROOT VALLEY - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Suspended between earth and open air, Sky Root Valley turns the idea of rootedness into a passage rather than a fixed condition. The wooded ravine seems to have opened beneath the viewer, allowing its roots to descend toward a pale, reflective expanse. What ordinarily anchors the landscape here becomes a delicate line between belonging and release.

The central divide draws the eye inward, but its destination remains uncertain. Brightness gathers near the distant opening while the surrounding soil falls into deeper shadow, creating the feeling of a threshold glimpsed rather than crossed. The scene is calm without being entirely settled, as though the land were holding two directions at once.

The downward-reaching roots give the work its strongest emotional tension. They suggest continuity, but also exposure - the hidden structures of the landscape have been brought into view and left suspended. Against the cool lower field, their thin forms feel less like explanations than traces of a connection that cannot be fully followed.

That mirrored or inverted space loosens the boundary between valley and sky, surface and depth, memory and present perception. The work invites a slower kind of attention, where the familiar language of trees and earth becomes dreamlike without losing its weight. Its quiet mystery rests in this reversal: the world remains recognisable, yet its foundations seem to open into distance.
