about this painting:

Silhouettes by Leonid Afremov

The origin of the word “silhouette”

He was so greedy that after his death his contemporaries didn’t post a beautifully painted portrait in the obituary but only the outline of his face. It was a mock, a caricature about his greediness that seemed to be absurd. His name was Etienne de Silhouette. He was a finance minister of the king of France Louis XV. With the course of time his name became common; however, now it doesn’t have that mocking connotation as it once had. Nowadays it only has the same appearance: it is an outline of an object, blurred contours of something.

A mystery behind every silhouette

Artists of all times have often painted silhouettes. Oil paintings depicting outlines of people or objects that look like blurry shadows make us contemplate, think and fantasize. They are such a great feast for thought! And they are not simply food which has been given to us on a silver platter, but a delicacy that we will have to cook ourselves. There is no need to mention that most frequently painted and famous silhouettes that artists prefer to depict are those of women and couples in love. A female figure has very beautiful smooth and round outlines if the painting depicts a naked body. Or we can see some floaty contours of wonderful summer dresses or an elegant hat. A female silhouette painted on a canvas is always a secret, a mystery suggested by an artist, his vision of a real beauty. This beauty can be so indescribable and touching and fragile at the same time that it seems to be impossible to paint using just oils and a canvas.

Mystery created by Leonid Afremov

Most of Leonid Afremov works don’t have clear outlines. No matter whether you look at a couple walking in the park, a lonely figure or a portrait of a famous person you can only see a blurry silhouette. One of the reasons for that is his unique technique which makes it almost impossible to paint clear and sharp details of people’s faces. Another reason is Leonid Afremov wants to leave some things for your imagination. When you look at this gorgeous painting called “Silhouettes” you can imagine those two people being someone you know:

  • You can your boyfriend/ girlfriend/ husband/wife;
  • Your parents or great parents;
  • Your friends that maybe have a wedding or a wedding anniversary coming and you still don’t know what to give them.

The main goal for every artist is to make people feel something when they look at their paintings. Leonid Afremov has definitely managed to reach this goal and evoked many pleasant emotions in our heart.

Our two newest acquisitions arrived today: "Boat under the sky" and "Town under the sky". Breathtaking! Just indescribably beauty. The colors are incredibly vibrant, the scenes at once exciting and calming, the texture is so multi-dimensional it literally places you inside the landscape. i've never seen art that is simply transforming the way you feel about your surroundings and life in general. Only Leonid's masterpieces do that--every single time. These two originals are our 24th and 25th large paintings. It has become a pleasant addiction:). These two paintings were custom made for us and they are truly special. Absolutely love them!!! The customer service and support are just amazing. Peerless! We are very happy and grateful to Leonid, Boris and David for the beauty they so generously share with the world. Do yourself a favor and buy a few pieces. Your home and your heart will be filled with joy, happiness and love. Gratefully, Dr Lani Kass

I'm from China. Knowing Afremov's works for years, since in college. So thrilled to finally realize my dream. For years, I kept visiting this website, picking fav ones and reminding myself why to save money. I'm working as a freelancer interpreter now, finally saved up enough money and got three pieces (four, including one from Amazon). I've already decided which one to buy next year and started to save more. Also get the Grand Canal, my heart was taken by it. For the paintings, the Eiffel Tower one caught me the first sight while I was a student in college. My ex got me a recreation, painted by him, but cannot compare to this original piece of course. The colour and the style are beyond words. Simply cannot describe the stunning beauty (Maybe in Chinese I can). Anyway, love all landscape pieces. Cannot wait to share with my friends and decorate my room. Best wishes, Mr. Afremov. Looking forward to more pieces.
