SHATTERED LANTERN explores a dimly lit scene with haunting seasonal motifs, outlined by sharp light edges, formed with dense chromatic relief through layered palette knife textures and sculptural strokes.
Bold impasto ridges catch shifting light, while scraped passages reveal underlying hues and tonal variation.

Within a field of fractured light, Shattered Lantern 2 turns illumination into a guarded, uncertain presence. Its central lantern-like form seems less an object to be identified than a focus of attention, holding a glow that resists the surrounding darkness. The orange-red panel at its heart gives the work its emotional pressure, as though warmth has survived but no longer feels secure.
The surrounding field breaks apart into charcoal, pale gray, ochre, and muted purple, creating an atmosphere suspended between recognition and dissolution. Angular flashes gather around the lantern without fully clarifying its setting. They suggest disturbance rather than scenery, a world caught in the aftermath of some unseen interruption.
That tension becomes especially vivid in the pale vertical highlight within the central panel. It offers a narrow axis of steadiness, yet the dark supports and heavy horizontal band enclosing it make the light feel contained. The image can be read as a meditation on shelter, but also on the limits of shelter when everything beyond its frame remains unsettled.
The work’s force lies in this refusal to let brightness become reassurance. The lantern is present, legible, and strangely remote, like a signal whose meaning has not arrived. Around it, broken marks and deep side passages keep the eye moving between a desire for coherence and the persistence of fracture.
