about this painting:
SHABBAT
WHAT IS SHABBAT
Leonid Afremov was born in Vitebsk, Belarus. Nowadays he is known all over the world for his art. However, not so many people are aware of the fact that he is half Jewish and has lived in Israel for a long time before moving to America. For him and his family respecting traditions is very important.
If you’re a true fan of his art, you will certainly notice some little details that demonstrate who he gets inspiration from his cultural background.
- For Jewish people, the most important day of the week is Saturday. They call it “shabbat”.
- In Judaism it is the seventh day of the week by which God has finished creating the world and decided to have some rest. That is why on that day you are not supposed and not allowed to work or to study. This refraining is maintained rather vigorously.
- Shabbat starts on Friday evening.
- Traditionally, you are supposed to have three meals during the day: One on Friday evening, one in the afternoon the next day and the last one in the evening.
- Before the sun sets on Friday, someone from a family must lit the candles and say a prayer. Usually, it is a female task. After that people pray or go to a synagogue.
- One of the most important elements of shabbat are two loaves of Challah. It is bread baked in a special shape. It symbolizes the bread that Jesus gave to its people in need.
- After that follows a delicious and abundant meal. However, it is important to start from salt and bread and say prays in the name of God.
TRADITIONAL MEAL
On this Leonid Afremov’s painting you can see a traditional meal for shabbah, one of the best examples of his art. Here you can see everything ready for the Friday evening when Jewish people start celebrating shabbat. On the right side of the canvas, you can see candles that are already lit. A luxurious bouquet of flowers reminds us of a festive and cheerful nature of this day. Near you can see a Challah and a bottle of wine that symbolize the gift of Jesus to the Jewish people described in Torah.
A canvas as a whole looks very cozy and homey. It makes us think about pleasant moments we share with our families like a tasty home-made dinner, long talks, love and mutual support.
