SEASONS OF SILENCE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

At the boundary between presence and absence, Seasons of Silence gives the field a watchful, almost ceremonial stillness. The central figure stands with arms extended, not quite guardian and not quite stranger, holding its ground beneath a sky that seems to press downward. Its posture suggests endurance without revealing whether it belongs to the land or has been left behind by it.

The pale, broad hat catches the light like a remnant of order in a landscape shaped by weather. Around it, the surrounding darkness deepens the figure’s ambiguity: this may be a sentinel, a memory, or simply a form through which the season makes itself visible. Nothing resolves the distinction, and that uncertainty gives the work its gravity.

Warm fragments in the clothing and field carry the feeling of autumn past its first beauty, when brightness begins to resemble warning. The grasses rising across the lower figure do not conceal it entirely; instead, they bind it to the ground, suggesting a quiet exchange between what stands upright and what is already yielding.

The work’s silence is therefore not empty. It gathers around the figure as a pause in time, suspended between harvest and decline, shelter and exposure. The outstretched arms hold open that unsettled interval, where solitude can feel less like abandonment than a form of witness.
