about this painting:
SAN FRANCISCO - GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
BRIDGES IN ART
An image of a bridge has always had a symbolic meaning.
- In ancient cultures, it symbolized a connection between our world and the world of the dead.
- For example, in Islam a bridge from our world leads to Heaven over the Hell. Those, who deserve, will go to Paradise and those who do not will fall over.
- For ancient Romans and Greeks, the gods used a bridge to come down to Earth and communicate with mortals.
- For Jewish people, a bridge is a symbol of an agreement between the god and his people.
Later this construction was considered a real miracle. People learned how to build enormous and very complicated bridges that could connect two parts of the country or of the city. It happened, for instance, with a bridge in San Francisco, which was named “The Golden Gate”. At the time of its appearance, it was the biggest bridge in the world.
It inspired many movie-makers and artists. One cannot name even one movie filmed in San Francisco that would not show the Golden Gate. It has become the most easily-recognizable symbol of the city.
Leonid Afremov is a contemporary artist who gets inspiration from nature and urban landscapes. He traveled a lot in his life, and each of these trips inspired one or two of his artworks. His favorite subject to paint is a night city during a rainy night. He likes to add light to the scenery painting lanterns and other sources of light. When Leonid Afremov first arrived to San Francisco, he was stunned by the beauty of the Golden Gate; it inspired a canvas that today can be called a true work of art.
On this canvas, you can see an enormous construction of the bridge at night. It is lit with hundreds of little bulbs and sparkles like a New Year Tree. The lights are reflected in the water of the river. It creates a festive atmosphere on the painting thanks to a lot of light. The sky explodes with colors as if it was full of fireworks on Independence Day.
The composition of the painting is rather simple but it has perspective and depth. This makes it look much more realistic and true-to-life. You can see another bank like a dark mass in the distance. You know that there is life beat there somewhere but everything seems quiet and peaceful on the painting.
