about this painting:
Fair wind is coming
We are used to the fact that Leonid Afremov’s regatta paintings as all the other his works are filled with a lot of bright colors. However, this cannot be said about this regatta painting which depicts yachts in the sea, which is preparing for a storm. And indeed there are a lot of pastel colors. They are very suitable for the image of the sea. It seems that the yachtsmen were not ready for such a turn of events. In the morning there was a bright sun, but by noon clouds are covered the sky and it turned gray. Spectators watching the regatta can even take benefit from this. An amazing sight awaits them – they will watch how athletes confront the weather. But we still hope that the weather will allow conducting the regatta and it will be safe for athletes and spectators. Don’t forget there is a zoom function available on the site and if you look carefully at what is shown on the yacht in the foreground, you can see the athlete occupied with the final preparation for the competition. He kneels on the deck and does something.
And in the background of the painting you can see a chain of mountains. But they are almost indistinguishable in the fog.
Conquering the sea
Regattas can be amateur and professional. Professional regattas can be held at very long distances and last several days. The preparation for such regattas takes a lot of time; it begins long before the start. It includes a careful selection of equipment, physical training, bunkering (refueling a vessel with fuel and motor oils), route planning, studying the climate, and much more.
Amateur yachting is more relaxed, weather conditions are much more comfortable, but the intensity of emotions is about the same. Here you can meet the same newcomers as you, and get together more fun. Sometimes people are fond of amateur regattas so much that they learned to be captains and then even go sailing themselves. There are several famous amateur regattas in the world:
- Marmaris Race Week (Turkey)
- Gochek Race Week (Turkey)
- Hanse Cup (Croatia)
- Bavaria Cup (Croatia)
and many others. All these regattas take place in the gentle weather conditions of the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas including a rich coastal program. They are ideal for beginners.
Enjoy the colors and emotions of the regatta oil painting by Leonid Afremov.
