about this painting:
CAFE IN THE OLD CITY
Many sides of Europe
Modern European cities strike the eye with broad prospects, spectacular high-rise apartments and neon-lit chillouts. But the true spirit of Europe lingers in the old districts, with their cracked pavement, fanciful buildings and small pubs, illuminated by the same lanterns that used to burn here centuries ago. During his numerous trips abroad, Leonid Afremov never stopped searching for inspiring scenes to capture on the canvas. That’s how cityscapes like this are born. One of a few original paintings available in his virtual gallery, it takes us to an anonymous street in the old part of Berlin busy with locals and tourists on a rainy autumn night.
Timeless beauty
Using a rich palette of saturated colors, the artist was capable of replicating architectural peculiarities of the old Berlin and conveying its festive atmosphere without using any photographic details. We can’t even discern the picture on the signboard, all we see is a blurred silhouette of an aproned woman carrying something on the tray. The flowers, the tree leaves and the sky are depicted with motley speckles of paint applied next to each other at different angles. Reflecting in the wet asphalt surface, lantern lights form a luminous river streaming down the street together with the by-passers. Full of color and light, this picture is a great cure for bad mood and empty walls!
What are some things to do in the old Berlin?
While touring the old part of the German capital, don’t forget to:
- Take photos of historical buildings.
- Visit art galleries and admire the work of street artists.
- Have a glass of the famous German beer in a local pub.
- Watch a classic play at an authentic 18th century theater.
- Buy souvenirs at one of the numerous tourist shops.
If you’re interested in original modern paintings and want to give your apartment a stylish Impressionist twist, this vibrant and cheerful cityscape will fill your room with color and joy. Keep a piece of old Berlin before your eyes and never stop admiring the beauty of its history-soaked streets trapped on the canvas by the skillful hand of Leonid Afremov!
