PLAYFUL FORM - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Beneath its exuberant color, Playful Form turns a shared sweet into a small study of balance, appetite, and invention. The stacked layers rise with the buoyancy of a fanciful structure, yet the surrounding rounded forms keep the arrangement connected to the pleasures of the table. Its deep purple setting gives this cheerful gathering a sense of theater, as though an ordinary indulgence has briefly become a ceremonial offering.

The central stack holds opposing energies together. Bands of green, orange, pink, blue, and dark navy create a lively rhythm, while the broad oval plate steadies their upward movement. Nothing feels entirely fixed; the forms seem to hover between confection, sculpture, and an improvised architecture whose rules are guided by delight rather than symmetry.

At the top, the large orange form introduces a gentle irregularity, like a final flourish that refuses strict order. Around the base, the smaller fruit-like shapes suggest abundance without insisting on a literal story. They may evoke a gathering after celebration, or simply the pleasure of seeing familiar things loosen into unexpected relationships.

The work’s vividness is not merely decorative. It treats color as a way of making generosity visible, allowing each shape to press forward while remaining part of a shared whole. Shadows beneath the stack lend the scene a quiet gravity, so its playfulness carries a hint of thoughtfulness: joy here is exuberant, but never weightless.
