The old and the new

In this painting, Leonid Afremov surprisingly combined the old and  the new. The old is the tower that is a key element of the painting –  after all it is called namely so – Old Tower. It seems that it was built on a small island in the middle of the ocean. Towering on the hill it looks especially beautiful in the rays of the setting sun. We see all the main elements of the medieval tower – the battlements on the roof and two narrow windows from which light seems to emanate. But apparently this is only a reflection of the setting sun. In all other respects, the painting is very modern – we see lonely yachts sliding on the sea surface – it is quite modern entertainment of the rich. On the next hill you can see the lights of the village. Although it looks disproportionately small compared to the tower and it seems that someone has kindled bonfires on the shore. As for the paints that the artist used to depict the sky, here we find the most unusual shades – orange, yellow, violet, pink, burgundy, different shades of blue and many others.
