about this painting:
Art of the present
Modern link art differs much from classical art, and sometimes those who like paintings by Leonardo da Vinci cannot appreciate paintings by Wassily Kandinsky. What is the difference?
- First of all, academic painting has been perceived by our ancestors, and there is a certain cult that makes them especially popular.
- Today every artist is to be compared with artists of previous ages and, therefore, has an untenable position.
Depicting new reality
At any rate, every artist has to depict new reality, for the world is unceasingly changing, and there are things having no place in paintings by classical artists. Thus, a depiction of a modern hospital will differ from a depiction of a hospital in earlier centuries, and it is an attempt to find something that unites paintings of different epochs what makes it especially interesting for us to look at several canvases depicting one and the same object. Leonid Afremov is also interested in depicting the world of the 21st century, and this marvellous painting of his is dedicated to an old pub, whose haunter is a modern drunkard.
Looking at this heady canvas in oil skilfully painted with a palette knife by Leonid Afremov, we see a night street in some European city. It was raining, and the slippery road is gleaming with the soft fire of lamps located behind the large windows of the buildings standing before you. Several people are going to and fro; however, the night is so dark that it is impossible for you to see anything but their black silhouettes – like that shadow of a modern drunkard in the doorway. Variegated signboardsare seen on the walls of the houses, and one of them is inviting you to enter the nice old pub whose windows are full of especially warm and affable light. There, behind the walls and windows, some bosom friends are likely to be sittingat table and drinking ale. They are talking about their life, and if they are your friends, you know that it is truly worth entering this pub.
