OBSIDIAN LANTERN explores a dimly lit scene with haunting seasonal motifs, shifting in uneven illumination, dragged into sculptural patterns through layered palette knife textures and sculptural strokes.
Bold impasto ridges catch shifting light, while scraped passages reveal underlying hues and tonal variation.
The composition invites close viewing, highlighting movement, contrast, and expressive material presence.

Within a narrow, watchful darkness, Obsidian Lantern 3 holds its light like a guarded promise rather than a simple beacon. Its warmth does not dissolve the surrounding gloom; it makes the gloom more present, drawing attention to what remains just beyond illumination. The work evokes a passage through uncertainty, where a small source of clarity carries both comfort and caution. The lantern’s position within the enclosing growth gives that feeling a distinctly private intensity, as though its light has been kept for someone approaching slowly.
The amber center gathers the eye, yet the surrounding burgundy flowers resist becoming mere decoration. They seem to press inward, creating an atmosphere that is protective and faintly ominous at once. A narrow path leads toward the lantern, but the destination remains unresolved. What lies ahead may be welcome, or it may ask for a steadiness that the light alone cannot provide.
That tension gives the scene its lasting charge. The lantern offers companionship without promising safety, while the deep shadows preserve the possibility of solitude, memory, or departure. Its glow feels less like an answer than a moment of orientation - enough to continue, not enough to make the unknown disappear.
