OBSIDIAN INTERVAL - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Between enclosing darkness and sudden radiance, Obsidian Interval holds a moment of passage that feels suspended rather than resolved. The dense stand of trees gathers the scene into a narrow threshold, while the warm opening beyond it suggests neither arrival nor departure, but the charged pause between them. Its atmosphere is dramatic without becoming declarative, inviting the eye to remain with uncertainty.

The central glow is not simply a source of light; it becomes an inward horizon, a place where distance seems to deepen. Orange and gold press through the violet and plum dusk, giving the clearing the force of a thought that has surfaced through obscurity. The surrounding trunks remain dark and irregular, preserving a sense that whatever lies beyond has not been fully disclosed.

Below, the water receives the same radiance and returns it altered. This mirrored interval makes the scene feel less like a fixed landscape than a meeting between what is seen and what is remembered. The reflection stretches the central warmth downward, while the cooler banks and shadowed foreground keep the image from settling into pure enchantment.

What endures is the tension between stillness and movement: the water appears calm, yet the vertical rhythm of the trees and the broken transitions of color keep the silence alive. The work offers a secluded passage where darkness does not oppose illumination so much as contain it, allowing the glow to feel more concentrated, more fragile, and more difficult to leave behind.
