In the suspended darkness, Obscure State considers closeness without granting it a name. Two figures stand together yet remain turned away, their identities withheld as if the shared moment matters more than the people within it. The work holds intimacy and uncertainty in the same space, asking whether companionship can remain real when recognition has fallen away.
The figures’ narrow distance gives the silence a human weight. They do not appear to gesture toward one another, but their alignment suggests an attention held in common - a pause in which neither presence is fully solitary. The brighter garment introduces a note of distinction, making difference visible without dissolving the surrounding anonymity.
Above them, the broad dark field feels less like a setting than an inward condition. It leaves the pair exposed to thought, memory, or an approaching absence, while the pale expanse beneath them offers no clear path forward. Their small scale makes the surrounding uncertainty feel immense, though not entirely empty.
What remains is a portrait of connection seen from its most difficult side: not confession, reassurance, or certainty, but the decision to remain beside someone when the larger world cannot be read. The work’s restraint keeps that bond unresolved, allowing its tenderness to coexist with distance and doubt.
