NORTHERN BAY depicts colorful wooden houses clustered along a Greenland harbor, painted red, yellow, and blue against dark rock, revealing the human and animal presence within Greenland’s Arctic environment.
Thick palette knife strokes give weight to buildings, land, and figures, adding tactile depth.
The scene balances cold surroundings with warmth from color and life.

Against the severity of an Arctic shoreline, Northern Bay finds a measured warmth in human habitation. The clustered houses rise above the dark waterfront like brief signals of belonging, their red, yellow, and blue façades holding their ground beneath a cool, spacious sky. The harbor feels settled yet exposed, shaped by the nearness of rock, water, and weather.
The narrow inlet gives the scene its tension. Reflections loosen the buildings into wavering bands below, suggesting how a place is remembered differently in stillness than in daylight. A small boat at the edge quietly extends this sense of connection, while the houses remain suspended between shelter and the elements.
Nothing here seems separate from its surroundings. The vivid structures do not overcome the gray coast; they make its restraint more legible, revealing color as a sign of persistence rather than decoration. Even the steep rise at the right seems to gather the settlement inward, leaving the calm water to carry its presence beyond the visible shore.
