NEW YORK LIGHTS ON MARS - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Against the city’s fevered night, New York Lights on Mars turns metropolitan brightness into a scene of estrangement, as if a familiar ambition had crossed into an uncertain atmosphere. The title holds recognition and distance together: this is a city that feels known through its signs and traffic, yet displaced by the fierce orange light surrounding it. Its intensity is not simply celebratory; it carries the unease of a place unable to become still.

The street draws the eye inward, but offers no clear arrival. Vehicles and passing crowds belong to a shared movement, while the dark towers gather around it like witnesses. That tension between momentum and enclosure gives the scene a cinematic charge, suggesting a city experienced less as a destination than as a pressure of lights, decisions, and anonymous crossings.

Across the central height, stacked signs interrupt the buildings’ mass with flashes of commercial promise. Their brightness competes with the scattered windows and the small marks moving through the sky, leaving the human world vivid but strangely provisional. The work lingers in that contradiction: urban life appears fully illuminated, yet the surrounding darkness keeps its meaning unsettled.
