about this painting:
Music and Wine
Although most of Leonid Afremov's paintings are landscapes, Music and Wine painting is likely to be attributed to still-lives. And not only on the basis of the composition but based on the meaning of the very word still-life – in French and Italian this word consists of two words which mean “dead nature”. Thus, in this painting we see quite a large number of autumn shades – brown, orange and yellow. But in general, the palette is quite rich - in addition to the above colors the shades of turquoise and violet are distinguishable. The painting itself is made in the form of multi-colored strokes filling all its space. They make the objects hardly distinguishable.
But still the outlines of apple, violin and a glass of wine are depicted quite clearly. These three subjects make up the composition of the painting. In addition, in the background, you can see a pile of books – two thick volumes. These objects create a single semantic space and each carries a hidden meaning. Books certainly symbolize the wisdom and knowledge passing from generation to generation, violin – music and creativity, apple is a symbol of the Fall and temptation, wine is a symbol of sacrifice, it is the blood of Christ. All this is quite difficult to put together – music, creativity, sacrifice and the Fall... However, the central place in the painting is taken by the violin, which means that the musical theme prevails. Leonid Afremov wants to emphasize that it would be very difficult for all of us to live in the world without music. It is music that gives us calming, it relaxes us and distracts us from unpleasant thoughts.
