MULTIPLANE PORTRAIT SHADE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

A face suspended between recognition and design gives Multiplane Portrait Shade its unsettled stillness, as though identity is being assembled from competing versions of itself. The right-facing profile remains legible, yet its features divide into angular planes that resist a single, settled reading. Pale passages along the cheek, nose, and mouth emerge from deeper violet-blue shadow, lending the expression an inward gravity without reducing it to a fixed emotion.

The dark recess where the eye would ordinarily anchor the portrait shifts attention away from observation and toward concealment. This figure does not seem to meet the viewer; it turns toward an interior threshold, held within a compressed field of rectangular forms. A small flare of orange near the forehead introduces a note of tension, like a thought that refuses the cool discipline surrounding it.

Around the head, the block-like forms feel less like a setting than a second structure of consciousness - ordered, fractured, and quietly unstable. The portrait’s drama lies in that balance: the face is close enough to invite intimacy, while its divided geometry keeps certainty just beyond reach. What remains is a presence shaped by hesitation, vivid precisely because it never fully explains itself.
