Misty City

The night walk

In this painting by Leonid Afremov we find the landscape that is characteristic of the artist – a lonely man walks through the night city. The painting is called Misty City. However, we hardly see fog in the canvas. Instead, a man with an umbrella is surrounded by bright colors, the main source of which is the lights illuminating the night sidewalk. Their bright light gives the picture an extraordinary variegation - those colors that would look dull and gloomy become motley and bright – on the left we see the lush green of the tree whereas on the right stretch the yellow-orange walls of the houses. The pavement tile glitters from the rain and the alley along which our character walks stretches into the misty distance. Perhaps only there we find the fog in this painting. But it is not at all scary and not as gloomy as it usually is and even causes some warmth of the soul. It paints the alley and houses in turquoise colors. Where else can you find fog of this color? Perhaps, that nowhere.
